Replacement of the apple with pumpkin in CDV's infamous Slevin.
It's pumpkin pie. You have the cooked pumpkin pie flavor just overloaded with spices. Even after a good heat cure I find the allspice a little too dominant. The cinnamon and ginger aren't far behind with the nutmeg bringing up the rear. The nutmeg's warmth tempers the licorice/clove-y taste of the allspice to a certain extent. I don't think straight clove has been added, it's not powerful enough.
At least I think it's allspice. Allspice has a nutmeg/ginger/clove taste anyway so sometimes it's hard to figure where the allspice might start and the rest might end.
Sadly, the pumpkin and crust are a little blown out by all the spices. Particularly the crust; it's one of the things I love about og Slevin. But they are there, the crust is just as good as ever when you pick it up and the pumpkin is a sweetened creamy version that you would expect from pumpkin pie. Its retained some of its earthy gourd flavor though. Very well done pumpkin.
I will also echo other reviewers in that you absolutely need to let this one sit for awhile. While it's pretty good out of the box, the spices are very strong and will beat the pumpkin and crust into utter submission. Giving it at least a week or 2 (or a speed cure) lets everything meld.
Slevin is one of a handful of 10 ratings I've given on this site. I don't love Pumpkin Slevin the way I do straight Slevin but it's the best pumpkin pie I've had to date.
